Understanding how websites track your location
When you browse the internet, your device is assigned an IP address by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This address is like a digital fingerprint that identifies your connection.
Every website you visit can see your IP address. Using databases like ours, they can determine your approximate physical location, which country you're in, your ISP, and even detect if you're using a VPN.
With a VPN, your traffic is routed through one of our servers. Websites only see the VPN server's IP address, not yours - allowing you to browse privately and appear to be in a different location.
Understanding the basics of how you're identified online

IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address is a unique string of numbers separated by periods (like 192.168.1.1) that identifies each device connected to a network. Think of it as your device's home address on the internet - without it, websites wouldn't know where to send the information you request.
When you type a website address into your browser, your device sends a request that includes your IP address. The website's server then sends the webpage data back to that IP address. This exchange happens billions of times every second across the internet.
The original format, using four sets of numbers from 0-255. There are about 4.3 billion possible IPv4 addresses.

The newer format with letters and numbers, created because we're running out of IPv4 addresses. Virtually unlimited addresses.

Example IPv6 address
This is the address that websites and online services see. It's assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and is visible to every website you visit. The IP address shown at the top of this page is your public IP.
This is the address your device uses within your local network (home or office). Your router assigns these to each device. They typically start with 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x and are not visible to the outside world.
Your public IP address can reveal more information than you might think:
A VPN masks your real IP address, replacing it with the VPN server's IP, keeping your true location and identity private.
