There is a lot of misinformation about VPNs and their providers, and most certainly not all of them are made the same. It’s always a good idea to read the fine print when it comes to logging of traffic that goes through your VPN provider. If it’s not clear you should certainly contact them before you buy.

What does your VPN provider log?

Different countries have different policies about data retention and logging. Switzerland, Spain & The Netherlands for example do allow VPN providers not to log, while in other countries they are required to save information about when you connection, from what IP and some even have to store what websites you are surfing on the VPN.

What does your VPN provider know about you?

Another point worth noting is about what information your VPN provider stores about you when you register. Do they store your name, email & IP address ? One privacy concern that’s often overlooked is when it comes to payment terms. Some providers only accept payment via credit cards or PayPal, which can be linked back to a physical person, while other accept virtual currencies like Bitcoin, Litecoin or Dogecoin.

What every VPN provider you choose, it’s best to know what you are buying. By taking the The Privacy Observer quick survey you will know whether what you think you know about VPNs is accurate or not !
